Biography: Christophe Robin

The beginning
Christophe Robin was born in 1971 in a village near Troyes, France, and his fascination with colour began at a very early age. As a 14-year-old apprentice Christophe discovered an “authentically passionate” profession: colourist. He knew that he had found his calling.

Light years away from the routine of everyday life… Christophe was dreaming of excitement and glamour.

Two years later he joined the training team of renowned French hairstylist Jean-Louis David as an assistant trainer. With his knack for teaching and his professional talent he was quickly promoted to the position of art director and began designing new coloration techniques.

At the beginning of the 90s, when he was only 19, Christophe Robin was already transforming his profession. Until then, hair colouring had been considered secondary in salons and little understood by often wary clients. Thanks to Christophe, it became an essential fashion asset, even more important the cut itself. Women began to see colouration in the same way they saw make-up, as something that would bring out the best in their hair.

Fashion and cinema
Convinced that fashion would play a part in his future, Christophe became a booker with the Elite model agency—or rather he became a booker by day and a colourist by night. He was the man responsible for Nadia Auermann’s blonde locks, Sybil Buck’s red tresses and Linda Evangelista’s colourations and re-colourations. His work with top models set the trend, and since they change their hair colour often, he soon became the only colourist they would see…

Christophe won the trust and admiration of prestigious designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and John Galliano, photographers like Mondino, Lindberg, Goude and Issermann and film directors such as Luc Besson.

In working with these creators, Christophe used hair colouring to complement and enhance the specific lighting and mood of the photos and visuals.

Colourist
At 24 Christophe opened the first Paris salon especially dedicated to coloration and hair care. The era when colouring was done in the back of the salon had come to an end, as had the era when its only purpose was to hide grey…

Christophe had won hair colouring the prestige it deserved: Once considered technicians, colourists were now seen as artists.

He received a great deal of press coverage as well as the patronage of the world’s most famous women, women like Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Adjani, Emmanuelle Béart and Kristin Scott-Thomas.

Christophe Robin was skilled at keeping his clients’ private lives private and making them feel relaxed and at home. He has since relocated from his first small jewel box of a salon on rue Mont Thabor to a new space in the Hotel Le Meurice, a serenely luxurious venue perfect for his clientele.
In Christophe’s colour studio on the first floor of the Meurice, Suite 128-129, women are treated to a truly unique experience.

In April 2004 Christophe Robin became the Color Designer for L'Oréal Paris where he develops of new formulations for home hair colouring products.

In his own words:
"Working for L'Oréal as a colourist-designer is the most rewarding and interesting thing that could have happened to me. I am more than thrilled to be working for such a well-known brand. Creating new trends, perfecting colour nuances, and sharing ideas with the laboratories is exhilarating."
