The natural colour of your hair depends on the quantity and dispersion of melanin pigments inside each hair fibre.
These pigments are produced by cells situated at the base of the hair follicles. As you get older these cells don’t produce as much melanin as when you’re younger, so your hair gradually will turn grey. The age at which you will first notice grey hair is largely hereditary and the average age that most people notice greying is around 35.
